Empowering Carers with Vital Breaks

Thanks to the Short Breaks Scheme, Swansea Carers Centre has been able to help carers recharge and improve their wellbeing, providing a range of activities, from popular relaxing hotel stays to fun day trips out.

Carers have enjoyed outings to places like Oakwood Park, Cardiff Castle and the Bristol Christmas Market. These trips provided a chance for carers to unwind and enjoy new experiences away from their daily responsibilities. Holistic therapies and subscriptions, such as memberships to the National Trust, allowed carers to enjoy some self-care and explore new interests, contributing to their overall wellbeing. Social events were a particular highlight of the project, with celebrations for Valentine's, Christmas and St David's Day bringing carers together to socialise, sing and dance.

Emma Daniels, Deputy CEO, Swansea Carers Centre, says,

The Short Breaks Scheme has enabled carers to understand their situation better, understand the needs of the cared for, reduce stress and improve confidence in caregiving responsibilities.

“Feedback from carers strongly indicates that accessing respite breaks can give people the motivation to carry on and sustain their caring relationship.” Emma says.

Working together

Swansea Carers Centre were quick to react when an unexpected opportunity arose thanks to the generous offer from Bistrot Pierre to give 25 carers a 3-course meal, completely free of charge. Funding from the Short Breaks Scheme simply paid for the transport to take these carers to the restaurant. This allowed opportunities for carers to meet with and bond with other carers in a similar situation to them.

Carers were extremely grateful for this opportunity:

“I just wanted to send a huge thank you to you and the carers centre for such a lovely lunch at Bistro Pierre. It was such a treat for both of us. You really make a difference.”

Another carer shared,

I feel like a new person. Thank you for showing me it's okay to look after myself too.

In demand

Demand has remained high for Microgrants, which play a crucial role in the scheme. They have funded personalised activities such as dining out, spa visits and cinema trips, providing opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment.

Runa Begum, from Swansea Carers Centre tell us, “This project has enabled us to offer a range of innovative respite solutions to suit the varying needs of carers, for replacement care and opportunities to access breaks at a time and place that suits them. This is particularly evidenced with the Microgrant vouchers, where carers can choose what they like and when they can use it.”

Inclusivity

Supporting the minoritised ethnic community is a key focus for Swansea Carers Centre. A day trip to Alum Rock in Birmingham was specifically requested by carers from this community. This trip allowed them to shop for Ramadan and Eid, providing a stress-free day away from their caring roles.

One carer expressed their gratitude, saying, “Thank you for a wonderful day out. I can't drive, so this trip was a rare treat. I can't wait for the next one!”

Additionally, the scheme funded a Chinese New Year event for the Llansamlet dementia group, allowing carers to celebrate and connect with their cultural heritage.

Sitting service

Funding from the Short Breaks Scheme enables support workers and volunteers to offer companionship sits for two hours a week for five weeks. This support is crucial in reducing stress and improving the quality of life for both carers and those they care for. The carers can take a break, safe in the knowledge that their loved ones are in good hands.

One carer, originally from Canada, who was becoming overwhelmed with her caring duties and desperate for some support, was helped thanks to this companionship service. She was able to attend a dementia training session, without worrying about leaving her frail parents alone.

Another shares, “Thank you so much for the support you have shown me the past few weeks. Sian (the sitter) has been an absolute delight. My husband looks forward to their chats. I feel like a new person who isn't afraid to ask for help any more. Thank you for showing me that it is ok to look after myself too.”

More than a break

The project has allowed carers the opportunity to have time for themselves, where they can meet people and socialise away from their caring roles. The Microgrants, trips, activities and the companionship service have created connections amongst carers who are in similar situations. The Short Breaks Scheme is more than just a break; it's a chance for carers to reconnect with themselves and others, fostering resilience and wellbeing.

Thanks to funding until March 2026, Swansea Carers Centre continues to reach out and support new carers. Find out more.
